Computing Techniques:

This 'hypertext' is available both on CD (from http://www.manbit.com) and the 'Internet'. The textual content of the two versions is very similar (except that the Internet version is updated more frequently), but the CD version (which can only be run under the 'Windows' operating system) contains higher quality (dynamic) images and interactive computer models which have not yet been translated into a format suitable for internet deployment. The hypertext was written making extensive use of the resources of the 'World Wide Web'. Some of the most useful sites were:

Anatomy:

The male 'Visible Human' was the source for many of the anatomical images used in this text. The original database can be found at http://www.uchsc.edu/sm/chs, but a more useful browser (which can generate sections in any orientation) can be found in Switzerland at http://visiblehuman.epfl.ch. It should be noted that the colour of the arterial and venous blood in the 'Visible Human' is almost identical. In one illustration (Figure A20), the arterial blood has been 'recoloured' otherwise, no other alterations have been made to the sections.

Since the inception of this project, the female 'Visible Human', sectioned at three times the resolution of the male, has become available. Interested readers are advised to use this specimen if more detailed anatomical views are required.

Computer models:

The physiological models were inspired by the original work of CJ Dickinson in his classic textbook 'MacPuf' 1. Information about the 'Mac' series of physiological models can be found at http://www.chime.ucl.ac.uk/Models/. I have implemented my versions in Delphi, but intend to translate them into 'Java' quite soon......

Programming tools:

The CD version of the hypertext was written in 'Toolbook' which can be obtained at http://www.asymetrix.com and the web version in 'Cold fusion' (http://www.allaire.com). The simulator was largely written in 'Delphi 5' from http://www.inprise.com.

Video signals were captured using a 'Miro' DC30 Plus video capture system and edited with Adobe 'Premiere' v 5.1 from http://www.adobe.com.

Medical databases:

Medical searches were generally performed on 'Medline' using the PubMed retrieval engine at the US National Library of Medicine on http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed/.

WWW search engines:

General searches of the 'World Wide Web' were accomplished using 'Google' at http://www.google.com, or 'Hotbot' at http://www.hotbot.com.

Browser requirements:

The current version has been developed using Internet Explorer 5 and the Windows Media Player version 7. In the 'fullness of time' I hope to implement a Netscape version together with versions of the videos which are appropriate for different bandwidths (the current versions have been prepared for a 56k modem).
