Pain Relief and Anaesthesia in Childbirth

HEAT AND COLD

Two further simple ways of easing pain and assisting relaxation during labour are through the application of heat and cold. They provide a source of counter-stimulation.

Heat can be applied in several ways:

  • by taking a hot shower or bath
  • via a hot water bottle or hot wet towel over the abdomen
  • by applying a hot compress over the perineum
  • Instead of applying heat to the skin, some women find that cold is more soothing. A cool, damp face-cloth is always refreshing, while an ice pack can easily be applied to the lower back.
